Our club is fortunate to have our City Manager, Jennifer Bramley, visit our club and discuss the current status of this city's recovery efforts after the two hurricanes. First, she gave a high-level review of some steps in defining how they create an emergency and recovery plan. Even though she is the city manager in charge of the city resources during the emergency, the Fire Chief oversees the city and its resources.
She discussed how our community came together after the storm to help each other. Many families lost everything, including their homes and personal belongings.
One of our community's more significant issues was that all the debris had to be separated into separate piles based on its type. She explained that the debris would go to different locations depending on its type, and if you mixed it, FEMA would not pick it up, nor would the city be reimbursed. For example, we had separate piles for electronics, large appliances, hazardous waste, vegetative debris, construction debris, and household garbage.
She reviewed how our public roadways would be cleared and who was responsible for the clearing and repair (if needed). The city is responsible for our local roads, the county for the county roadways, and the state would clear the state-defined roadways.
Thank you, Jennifer and our city employees, for your prep work before the storms and your efforts to get our city back on its feet after the storms.
