Nonprofit Introduction

Club President David Shelor introduced Amber Slicer, the Executive Director of Suncoast Voices for Children. She begins her presentation by explaining that the organization is a local nonprofit serving Pinellas and Pasco counties since 2004, working to keep children out of the dependency system.

DCF Challenges and Support Programs

Amber discussed the challenges faced by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) in managing child abuse and neglect cases. She highlighted the need for immediate intervention in cases where children are at risk, such as providing beds for a family of six sleeping on one air mattress. Amber also emphasized the importance of providing essential items for children removed from their homes, such as clothes, toiletries, and school supplies. She introduced the organization's three main programs: Children's Needs, which provides for physical, safety, educational, and normalcy needs; Style Voiced Clothing Closets, which provides immediate clothing and toiletries; and the Family Support Services Office, which offers additional support. Amber also shared a story about a child named Isaiah, who had been in the foster care system since he was four years old, and the organization's efforts to support him and his family.

Opportunity Passport Program Success Story

Amber discussed the Opportunity Passport program, a financial literacy initiative for young adults aging out of foster care. The program covers topics such as car purchases, renting an apartment, and credit scores. It provides a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $3,000 for savings towards an asset, such as education fees, a car, or starting a small business. Amber shared the success story of Isaiah, who used the program to start a tree-trimming business and eventually become a certified flight instructor. Amber emphasized the program's role in filling gaps and providing immediate support for young adults transitioning out of foster care.
